General Requirements To Receive A Work Permit In Canada

There are specific requirements you need to meet depending on where you are when you apply for your work permit.

But regardless of where you apply or which type of work permit you apply for, you must:

  • A prove that you will leave Canada when your work permit expires;
  • A proof of bank statement showing that you have adequate money to take care of you and your family during your stay in Canada and to return home;
  • Must have no criminal record, and obey the Canadian law;
  • Must not be a threat to Canadian security;
  • Must be in good health, and be willing to take a medical exam if necessary;
  • Will have no plan of working with an employer having an “ineligible” status;
  • Bust have no plans working for an employer who on a regular basis, offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages;
  • Must provide any other required document requested by the officers;

To apply from within Canada, the following eligibility requirements must be met:

  • Must have a valid study or work permit;
  • Your spouse, common-law partner or parents must have a valid study or work permit;
  • You must be eligible for a post-graduation work permit, while your study permit is still valid;
  • Must have a temporary resident permit that is valid for six months or more;
  • Must be in the position of waiting on a decision on an application for permanent residence from inside Canada;
  • You might have made a claim for refugee protection;
  • Might have been recognized as a convention refugee or protected person by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada;
  • You are allowed to work in Canada without a work permit but you need a work permit to work in a different job (but this does not apply to visitors);
  • You are a trader, investor, intra-company transferee or professional under the Canada-United State-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
